Nobody’s Fool reminded me why I’ve enjoyed reading Coben so much over the years. A strong premise, a pacy beginning, and some interesting twists and turns even when you are beginning to put things together yourself.

Here, ex-copper Sami Pierce flashes back almost 25 years. He’s travelling around Europe when he meets Anna in Spain. They share a few precious nights together – just fun really, and then he wakes one morning to find her bloody and dead next to him. He tries reporting it, but by the time cops visit the apartment, the body is gone. Sami goes home and tries, desperately, to forget.

Until one day, he’s teaching a night class on criminology and who makes an appearance but Anna – the face from his memories and nightmares. He gives chase but finds more mysteries instead of answers. Why is she hiding? Who is she really?

This felt fun and fresh compared to some thrillers I’ve read recently. There was plenty of tension, but humour, too (I really liked the night class), and the plotting stayed nicely on the believable side for me. Looking forward to the next one!
