The third book in this series, which I’d recommend reading in publication order if you want to make the most of it.
At first glance this book feels like quite a departure from the previous two. The main character is bookseller Fern instead of loveable orc Viv. Instead of developing a small business (coffee shop and bookshop), the main thrust of the story is a risky adventure. Plus Fern swears a lot. Like, really a lot.
But one theme remains – trying to figure out who you are in an uncertain world.
I won’t lie, I missed the coffee shop and Viv. I didn’t enjoy the medium stakes as much as the lower stakes. But there is lot of charm in this world, and I enjoy seeing people wanting to be at their best, for themselves and for others. Where the author can take the series from here, I don’t know. But I’d like to visit again. Maybe with a huge latte in hand.
