Six Strikes is a dark and twisty tale.
I’m not always a dark and twisty sort of reader, but I was for this book. Main character Maddie has had a horrendous youth, and she carries the trauma with her forward, going after wretched abusive men she calls ‘fleas’. Eventually, her crimes catch up with her, and she’s interviewed in jail by an unknown (to the reader) visitor, so we can find out how everything unravelled.
She’s hard to sympathise with, yet you find yourself on her side most of the time, anyway. Six Strikes tackles that question of whether two wrongs make a right or not – for Maddie, they certainly do. Her work, according to her, was necessary. As a reader, I’m not sure, but I do feel bad that she couldn’t escape her past.
A memorable read.
