The Shattering Peace is a fun, almost cosy tale about the possible extermination of a colony. I know, it sounds all wrong, but I’m right about this. Add in some super intelligent aliens and tricky politics, and you’re in for quite the ride.
This is part of the Old Man’s War series, of which I’ve only read book 1. I think this is perfectly readable without knowledge of the whole series, though reading one may make you want to buy others (I’m certainly going to go back and fill in the gaps).
It’s written in Scalzi’s trademark witty style, with lots of banter. It may get on some people’s nerves – but I really enjoy it. There were quite a few laugh out loud moments, and I suspect in audio form it might be even funnier.
But it’s not all fluff. The science is interesting, and the ethical considerations and implications it all leads to. Let’s hope there’s more in the series still to come!
