A humorous murder mystery set in 1973 – and the second in a series, though my first experience (and while there were references to the first, I understood everything well enough without having read it).
I enjoyed this as it felt fresh compared to your average cosy crime – it was less cosy, more quirky, for a start. We follow three perspectives: Tony, your average guy who is just in the wrong place at the wrong time; Police Sargeant Aline James; and assassin (nb. not the bad guy as such, fyi) John Brown.
None of them are sweet and cuddly. Tony just wants to get on with his acting job, Aline’s trying to fight crime and ignore the patriarchy, and John Brown mostly just wants to avenge his mother.
I enjoyed the historical-ish nature of it and the almost-relationships between the POV characters. It never fell into cliche or predictability. And I didn’t laugh out loud, but I did make a lot of wry smiles as I read. Would definitely return for the next (and probably hunt out the first).
